■ 概要
The aim of this paper is to discuss the characteristics of usage and adjustment of gers, Mongolian mobile dwellings in the developmental cycle of the household. I carried out fieldwork in Duut sum, Hovd aimag in August and September 2012 and interviewed 17 couples on the history of ger usage.
Young couples first obtained and started to use a ger at marriage. They held their wedding ceremonies in a large ger. However, they cut or removed some parts of their ger to reduce the size. There was a rational decision that reduction of the ger size saved both heating fuel and moving costs.
A couple used 3-5 gers through their lives. Also the function of the gers changed along with the gers’ biographies. At first, gers were used for ceremony and residence in both the public and domestic spheres. Later, gers whose sizes were reduced were used as kitchens and storerooms in the domestic sphere. At last, old gers were used as animal sheds. In conclusion, gers’ sizes along with the number and functions of gers changed in accordance with the developmental cycle of the household.
