A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Chinese and Japanese Communication Styles: Focusing on Small Group Discussion
■ 概要
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the characteristics of communication styles in small group discussion of Chinese by comparing and contrasting with those of Japanese. A quantitative analysis of the data of small group discussions reveals that there is a sharp difference between the two groups in the manner in which they expressed disagreement during the discussion. While Chinese participants basically were not hesitant to express their disagreement to the previous speaker, Japanese participants tried not to disagree with the members of the group. In conclusion, the communication styles of the Chinese are different from those of the Japanese and are rather similar to those of Americans, i.e., seldom hesitating to speak up, being task-oriented, expressing disagreement frankly, in a sharp contrast to those of the Japanese.
