Co-construction of an L2 speaker's interactional competence: Recipient responses in an interview activity.
■ 概要
Through a micro-analysis of interview data between an L2 speaking interviewer and an L1 speaking interviewee, the following points were illustrated. First, the L2 speaker was not supplying recipient responses randomly, but was instead doing so by paying close attention to the design of the interviewee's talk. It was also shown that the L2 speaker's recipient responses (e.g., hai 'yes,' aa 'oh,' repetitions, and rephrasing) were employed not only to indicate that she was listening to the interviewee, but also to publicly show that she was getting the gist of his talk and to facilitate their joint participation and the progressivity of the interview. More importantly, from the perspective of second language studies, the L2 speaker's three types of recipient responses, (1) the repetition of an expression used in the interviewee's prior turn, (2) the use of a change-of-state token, and (3) the rephrasing of the expression used by the interviewee, were not derived from her communicative competence as an individual, but were co-realized through both interlocutors' finely-tuned participation in the interaction.
