Critical Thinking Education Faces the Challenge of Japan
■ 概要
Paradoxically, Japan presents both a difficult and a pro- mising setting for the advancement of critical thinking skills. One deep-rooted obstacle stems from anti-rational ideological traditions and prejudices. Another comes from the rigidly hierarchical, conformist nature of Japanese society ,which does not encourage divergent opinions or their expression. Probably most significant are the impediments created by the educational system, based as it is on rote-memorization entrance examinations. On the other hand, reasons for optimism can be seen in the basic rationality of the Japanese people, recent moves to reform the education system and promote reasoning, and the responsiveness of students to a critical thinking approach. The author presents conclusions based on personal experience and research to assess the prospects for critical thinking in Japan.
