  Evaluating Critical Thinking Progress in EFL Composition Classes

  This paper describes a study of the practicality of including critical thinking in EFL/ESL instruction. The study made use of the Ennis-Weir Critical Thinking Essay Test to compare progress in critical thinking during a year of academic English instruction among two groups of Japanese university students. A control group received instruction in argumentative essay composition, while a treatment group received critical thinking training as well. The treatment group made significant gains on the test, while the control group did not. The results imply that instruction in argumentative rhetorical forms by itself may not do much toward developing critical thinking skills.
