Receptive Bilinguals and the Critical Period Hypothesis
■ 概要
This paper looks at the issue of receptive bilingual children and considers the question of whether or not they can develop productive, native-like competence in later life. Factors that may contribute to the development of receptive bilingualism are considered. Next, while the critical period hypothesis remains controversial, there are significant points of agreement regarding potential consequences of a critical period for second language learning. A summary of this common ground regarding the critical period hypothesis follows. The paper concludes with the prediction that there should be no biologically based factors that would constrain receptive bilingual children from the attainment of native or near-native competence in the minority language in later life provided adequate motivation and linguistic stimulus.、(論説資料保存会『英語学論説資料』第38号(2004年分)に採録)
